All wrestle well but only Starrs Mill advances to MaconThere was a ton of wrestling around the state last weekend as teams competed in their area duals for a chance to go to Macon this weekend for the state duals. Only the top two teams from each area would qualify for this weekends event, so the competition was fierce. In the 4-AAAA area duals, which took place at Whitewater High School on Saturday, Woodward Academy and Lithia Springs placed first and second with McIntosh placing fourth. Sandy Creek went 2-2 on the day while Whitewater only wrestled in exhibition matches against teams that had been eliminated previously in the event. The Wildcats lost to Douglas County and Sandy Creek. Sandy Creek lost to Lithia Springs (51-26 and McIntosh 41-35, while beating Chapel Hill 48-22 and Whitewater 47-35. Sandy Creek got good performances on Saturday from Frank Brand (140), and Adam Byrd (189). Both wrestlers went 3-0 on the day. Coach Scott Smith also cited good wrestling from Derek Scarbrough (215). Scarbrough went 3-1 with his one loss being a close match against a tough wrestler from Lithia Springs. I was real proud of the way he battled, said Smith. Sandy Creek faced East Coweta last night after the paper went to press. They will have the weekend off and will take on Chapel Hill and Paulding County next Tuesday. In the 4-AAAAA area duals, Starrs Mill finished in second place behind Union Grove, meaning they will be making the trip to Macon this weekend. The Panthers, currently ranked ninth in the GaSports.com poll, will face a slew of tough wrestlers from schools such as Collins Hill, Walton and Parkview among others. The Panthers went 5-1 over the weekend, defeating Lovejoy 72-12; Mundys Mill 66-12; Fayette County 41-31; Newnan 78-12 and East Coweta 45-18 and losing to Union Grove 40-33. The records for the Starrs Mill wrestlers over the weekend were: Kevin OBrien (103) 5-1; Joey Hoyt (112) 4-2; Keagon Overton (119) 5-1; Stephen Savage (125) 3-0; Chris Green (125) 3-1; Cory Radcliffe (130) 4-1; Ryan Jones (135) 5-1; Brandon Witta (140) 6-0; John Donaldson (145) 3-3; Chris Sudduth (152) 1-0; Patrick Kellerman (160) 6-0; Jeff Partlow (189) 5-1; Bradley Connor (215) 6-0 and Ben Griffin (275) 5-0. The state duals will begin on Friday morning at the Macon Centreplex.
