The McIntosh Chiefs Wrestling Team competed in the eighth annual Mark Toomey Invitational wrestling tournament this past weekend in Savannah. Nineteen teams from Georgia and Florida competed in this well-known regional tournament held at Groves High School. The young squad of three seniors, three juniors and eight freshmen finished strongly placing 10th with five wrestlers placing in the medal rounds.
Richard Hughes and Ben Trahan paced the Chiefs with four wins each along with Doug Taylor, Co-Captain Davarion Smith and Scott Ritter each with three wins. Hughes (103), Taylor (125) and Ritter (171) took home fourth place medals with Trahan (130) and Smith (145) securing fifth place honors.
Other team members contributing to the teams success were Norm Brooks (112), Jesse Toscano (119), Carl Scheumann (135), Matt Penn (140), Erik Willanzheimer (152), Alex Shoemaker (160), Matt Carroll (189), Daryl Walton (215) and Jonathon Smith (275).
We came to Savannah with a young team working hard to develop itself, said Coach Nick Bellantoni. We were returning to this tournament to gauge how well we have progressed as a team. I am proud of the leadership shown by our seniors and juniors during the tournament and the season.
On Wednesday, the Chiefs beat Whitewater 58-24 and Chapel Hill 35-33 and lost to Woodward Academy 59-24. Smith and Walton both went 3-0, while Hughes, Trahan and Matt Penn (135) went 2-1 and wrestled well.
Starrs Mill traveled to Woodland on Wednesday night and split their matches. They lost to Woodland 41-28 and defeated Eagles Landing 52-27. Their dual record is now 22-7.
Keagon Overton (112), Bradley Connor (215) and Ben Griffin (275) both went 2-0. Other winners against Woodland were Kevin OBrien (103), Kevin Thurber (119) and Chris Green (125). Other winners against Eagles Landing were Cory Radcliffe (130), Ryan Jones (135), Brandon Witta (140) John Donaldson (145), Patrick Kellerman (160) and Jeff Partlow (189).
Starrs Mill will wrestle in the Area 4-AAAAA duals at East Coweta High School tonight and tomorrow, while McIntosh will wrestle in the Area 4-AAAA duals at Whitewater tomorrow.
