Tyrone Recreation looking to give the people what they want in 2005

The Tyrone Recreation Department is looking forward to an exciting year and it is up to the community to help the department be all it can be.

“We are trying to develop community based programs that people want and will use,” said Kay Green, Program and Event Coordinator for Tyrone Recreation. Green has worked for the town of Tyrone since October and is trying to fill the Roger Spencer Community Center with a number of interesting and exciting classes for the residents of Fayette County to take part in.

Currently, the Tyrone Recreation Department offers Mini Mike’s Basketball and Kid’s hip hop dance classes for children and Pilates, Total Body Workout and Country and Western Line Dancing for adults. Later this year, Tai Chi, Digital Photography, Dog Obedience, Writing and Genealogy will be introduced, as will a class called “Taking Charge of Your Financial Future.” Green is also hoping that a karate class will start later this year and that the town will also start a recreational soccer league. Green also stated that if someone has an idea for a class and might consider teaching it to call and propose it to her.

“We need people to tell us what types of classes they’d like to see in Tyrone,” said Green, explaining that the upcoming Tai Chi class was suggested by someone. For a class to be successful though, people must sign up and participate. “We can’t hold a class for one person,” said Green.

In addition to the community center being used for classes, the facility is also frequently rented out for use for meetings, parties and other functions. There are tables and chairs at the center, as well as a small stage and lots of space.

Green is also hoping that the community will come together this year to help build a playground at Handley Park and that events like the annual Easter Egg Hunt and Tree Lighting continue to grow in popularity.

“I’d just like the recreation department become an asset to the community,” said Green.
