Teams perform well at a number of weekend tournamentsThe wrestling teams from the five public high schools in Fayette County competed in a variety of tournaments over the weekend.Sandy Creek finished in sixth place at the Eagle Classic with 100 points, two points away from third place. The Patriots had one wrestler place second; Adam Byrd (189), two wrestlers place third; Stephen Hoffler (103) and Frank Brand (145) and one wrestler place fourth; Travis Cooper (160). We wrestled the best we have all year, said Coach Scott Smith, who was without some of his usual wrestlers in the tournament. It was Hofflers first time placing in a tournament and Coopers first time placing this year. Smith also cited good wrestling from Drew Gunnin (130) and Blake Morgan (152) The Patriots will host Douglas County and Creekside this afternoon and will wrestle in the area 4-AAAA duals at Whitewater High School on Saturday. Matches will begin at 9 a.m. Whitewaters wrestling team competed at the Alexander Invitational. Jordan Strain (135) and Jake Griffin (152) both had second place finishes. The Wildcats will wrestle Chapel Hill and Woodward Academy at McIntosh this afternoon and will host the area duals on Saturday. Fayette County wrestled in the Chattahoochee Invitational over the weekend. Drake McCoy was the champion of the 275 weight class, while Matt Dyer (215) and Donte Douglas (130) placed second. The Tigers hosted Stockbridge and Salem yesterday after the paper went to press and will wrestle in the area 4-AAAAA duals at East Coweta High School on Friday and Saturday. McIntosh placed 10th out of 19 teams in the Mark Toomey Invitational in Savannah over the weekend. Richard Hughes (103), Doug Taylor (125) and Scott Ritter (171) placed fourth, while Ben Trahan (130) and Davarion Smith (145) placed fifth. The Chiefs will host Whitewater, Chapel Hill and Woodward this afternoon and will wrestle in the area duals at Whitewater on Saturday. Starrs Mill placed third out of 15 teams in the Hoover Invitational and had nine wrestlers place. Jeff Partlow (189) and Bradley Connor (215) placed second, Kevin OBrien (103) and Stephen Savage (125) placed third, Cory Radcliffe (130) and Patrick Kellerman (160) placed fourth, Brandon Witta (140) placed fifth and John Donaldson (145) and Ben Griffin (275) took seventh place. Starrs Mill will wrestle at Woodland High School this afternoon and will wrestle in the area duals at East Coweta on Friday and Saturday.
