It was a weekend for Sandy Creek to tangle with local teams.
Sandy Creeks boys and girls basketball teams faced Whitewater on Friday and took on Starrs Mill on Saturday. The boys went 2-0 and the girls went 1-1 after a one point loss to Starrs Mill on Saturday night.
On Friday, the Sandy Creek Lady Patriots defeated Whitewater 61-24. Mary Fields and Morganne Campbell had 13 points each in the win, while Jenna Jackson contributed 10 points and and six steals. It wasnt all good news for Sandy Creek though as Fields rolled her ankle and could be out all this week.
Its hard to lose your leading scorer and floor general, said Coach Jim Waller, who added that he didnt think the injury was as bad as they originally thought, but they wouldnt be taking any chances.
The loss of Fields reared its head the next night as the Lady Patriots (12-2) could not mount enough of an offense to get by Starrs Mill. Tracey Paschal, Alyssa Ruff and Jackson each scored six points for Sandy Creek but the team shot 22 percent from the field and 30 percent from the free throw line. Sandy Creek had a 23-20 lead with 4:19 to play in the game and would not score again. Starrs Mills Emily Woodward would though, scoring four of her 10 points in the span of 45 seconds to give her team the win. The Lady Panthers (5-8) were also assisted by nine rebounds from Angela Garza.
The Sandy Creek boys basketball team (12-3) handed Whitewater an 80-37 loss on Friday before beating Starrs Mill (3-12) 67-40 on Saturday.
On Saturday, the Patriots built a 16-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game and though the Panthers would charge back and outscore the Patriots 17-14 to end the half down 30-17, Sandy Creek never relinquished control. The third quarter saw Sandy Creek outscore Starrs Mill 18-6 and they would push the lead to 30 points, 59-29, with five minutes remaining in the game. The Patriot defense came up with a lot of steals in the win and ended up on the line frequently during the game, both leading to easy points.
On Friday night, the Starrs Mill boys team picked up their third win of the season by defeating Union Grove, 64-40, while the girls lost 46-37. Shannon Dougherty scored 13 points for Starrs Mill in the loss.
In other games over the weekend, Whitewaters boys and girls lost to Central of Carrollton on Saturday. The Lady Wildcats (3-8) lost 56-31, while the boys (5-8) lost 72-52.
McIntoshs boys and girls lost region games to Woodward Academy and Douglas County over the weekend. The Lady Chiefs (2-10) fell to Woodward on Friday, 48-40 and then lost to Douglas County 69-41, while the boys (1-11) lost to Woodward 71-62 and then lost to the Douglas County Tigers, ranked third in AAAA, 92-70. Dewayne Irwin had 24 points and Marcus Chisolm had 21 points for the Chiefs in their loss to Woodward.
Landmark Christian spilt with W.D. Mohammed on Friday with the boys winning 64-63, while the Lady War Eagles lost 52-36. It was the boys second win in a row. On Saturday, Fayette Countys boys team (4-8) lost a close one to Henry County, 73-72, while the Lady Tigers (10-5) picked up another W with a 52-27 win. Our Lady of Mercys boys and girls both picked up wins over Eagles Landing Christian Academy. The boys (4-10) won 41-39, while the girls won 49-30. Uzi Moh had 14 points for the Lady Bobcats (8-2) in their win.
This weekend is also full of fun local match-ups. Sandy Creek will host McIntosh on Friday and Fayette County on Saturday. Fayette County will play at Union Grove on Friday, while Starrs Mill will play at Mundys Mill. Whitewater hits the road, playing at Creekside on Friday and at Alexander on Saturday, while Our Lady of Mercy hosts W.D. Mohammed on Friday and plays at Mt. Zion of Carrollton on Saturday. The W.D. Mohammed girls team is ranked third in Class A. Landmark Christian will host Southwest Atlanta Christian on Saturday. The Southwest Atlanta Christian boys are ranked fifth in Class A.
