Students win patriotic essay competition

For the second year in a row, a J.C. Booth Middle School student has won first place in the Patriot’s Pen Contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in Peachtree City, Post 9949.

Eighth-grader Christos Anninos took first place honors in the 2004 competition along with fellow Booth student Patrick Kelly, also in eighth grade, who placed second.

Each year the VFW sponsors the national essay contest, which gives students an opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas on a designated patriotic theme. This year’s theme was “What Service to Our Country Means to Me.”

Middle school students in the Peachtree City area, including private and home schooled, competed in the contest. Essays were judged on clarity of ideas and theme development.

As the local post’s first place winner, Christos will advance to the district competition as well as receive a $200 United States Savings Bond. Patrick will also receive a savings bond in the amount of $150 for his winning entry.

Both students, along with their parents and teachers, will be honored at a special dinner hosted by the VFW.
