The Villages brings in the Bard

secondary headline: Everybody gets in the act to celebrate Grantville’s special day

This Saturday is Grantville Day, but you don’t have to remind the local residents in this western Coweta town. They have been busy getting everything ready for their big celebration. The Grantville Better Home Town organization, who took over the reins of the festivities in 2002 from the event’s originators, the Grantville Association, are geared up for a full day of fun and entertainment.

The day begins at 10 a.m. with carnival rides located at the extreme north end of Colley Park. There will also be a “Moonwalk” provided by the young peoples group of the First Baptist Church of Grantville at their booth.A children’s talent show will be held at the Grantville Auditorium on LaGrange Street immediately after a parade of all the contestants which begins at 3 p.m. The show is divided into two age groups; ages 6 - 11 at 3:30 p.m. and ages 12 - 18 at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, $1 for children, and no charge for those five and younger.

The Grantville Public Library will run a booth at Grantville Day for the purpose of selling unneeded books (at very low prices) and to provide an opportunity for the community to get acquainted with its new manager, Mary Drake.

Drake, who completed her training at the LaGrange Headquarters Library on June 3, began working at the Grantville Library on June 4.

The Coweta Writers Group has announced that it will be having a booth of book-signing tables for local authors at the community festival. Author, Debbie Kendrick, will be signing her book entitled “Til Death Do Us Part”, which sets forth the results of the author’s study of the Bible’s teaching on the subject of marriage.Kendrick is the Pastor of the Heaven Bound Church of God in Centralhatchee. The CWG Booth will remain available until late afternoon.

David Wilson, co-founder of the Coweta Writers Group, lives on Griffin St. in the oldest house in Grantville and is a direct descendant of the first settler in Grantville. He is the author of several published writings, several vampire short stories, and the novel “Curse of The Vampire”. Wilson is also playwright, director, and executive producer of the Barbara Nolan Comic Vampire Dramas, which have been performed annually in the Grantville Auditorium since the year 2000.

Shanna Walston will display her painting which won last year’s 11th Congressional District High School Art Contest. She will also bring some of her more recent works, including some she has painted on large gourds which she grows in her garden. Walston is a Dean's List student at the State University of West Georgia where she is preparing for a career in elementary school teaching. In addition, an art competition by local painters will take place.

Stilt walking and juggling will be done by Todd Key, who lives on Post Street, and is a nationally known professional juggler and comedian. Earlier this year he provided entertainment for the armed forces in Iraq under the auspices of the USO. Balloon making by Leah Cebulski and children’s storytelling by “Mother Goose” are sure to entertain the young ones in the crowd.

Canine agility exercises by Katelyn Key’s dog Chandler offers something special for area dog lovers. Chandler won last year’s Great Dane Clubs of America national agility award, noviceclass. The Angel Food Ministry who sell donated food at a very low price will have a booth to promote their outreach work. Additional information is available at their website, www.angelfoodministries.com.
