County objects to city’s sewer solution

The Fulton County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution urging the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) to reconsider its March 2004 approval of a request by the City of Atlanta to discharge untreated sewage into Peachtree Creek.

The resolution, sponsored by District 5 Commissioner Emma I. Darnell, passed unanimously.

In November 2003, the City of Atlanta requested approval to build an emergency overflow spillway that would allow the discharge of untreated sewage into Peachtree Creek if the flood control gates on the West Area storage tunnel fail to close during wet weather. EPD granted approval of the request through an administrative process that bypasses the usual requirements for public input.

“District 5 residents who I represent would be most endangered by untreated sewage,” said Commissioner Darnell.Ê “They never had opportunity to comment, which is a travesty.Ê This Board of Commissioners will not stand for it.”

A copy of the resolution will be forwarded to the Director of the EPD.
