DAPC budget request to PTC is tabled

The Development Authority of Peachtree City will have to wait a little longer to figure out how to pay its projected expenses for this year.

The authority has asked the City Council to foot the estimated $14,255, which would include legally mandated training, legal representation and its share of an annual holiday luncheon that hosts state economic development officials.

Previously, the authority funded its expenditures with a portion of its proceeds from the city’s hotel-motel tax. But that revenue stream is cut off now that the city’s tennis center and amphitheater, once operated by the authority, are now overseen by the city’s new Tourism Association.

City Manager Bernie McMullen has suggested that the city pay for the DAPC’s request by paying the authority’s invoices directly.

“They would provide us the invoices and we’ll pay those bills,” McMullen said. “We will not be transferring city funds to them.”

Several council members indicated it was important for the city not to indicated it would assume the authority’s debt.

“Whatever we do, I want it to be clear that we’re not absorbing their debt and not taking that upon us,” said councilman Murray Weed.

There were also several questions about the authority’s budget proposal that went unanswered because authority president Scott Formel wasn’t at Thursday’s council meeting.

Mayor Steve Brown wanted to know if the authority plans on continuing to use its current attorney, Mark Oldenburg, who Brown said is a substantial creditor of the authority.

Council tabled the matter until its next meeting to create more time to gather information on the matter.
