Fox that bit south Fayette man tests positive for rabies

Tests on a fox that bit a South Fayette man have come back positive for rabies.

The man, who was bitten Sunday evening at his residence on Old Greenville Road, has begun to take his shots to ward off the potential of contracting rabies, said Bill Newman of the Fayette County Animal Shelter.

Officials are urging residents to make sure their cats and dogs have current rabies vaccinations as the summer weather has brought sightings of wild foxes in Fayette.

Although not all foxes have rabies, the danger is there, Newman said, so pet owners should be cautious. That includes keeping cats and dogs in an enclosed area whenever possible, he suggested.

Residents should also report any contact with foxes that act aggressively and chase animals or humans. To file such a report, contact the Fayette County Animal Shelter at 770-487-6450.
