Best in the nation again

Special to The Citizen

J. C. Booth Middle School’s 2004 Science Olympiad team racked up the school’s eighth national title Saturday at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Penn. The students captured medals in 11 of 23 events on their way to claiming the team title over 53 other schools from across the United States.

The Booth team qualified for the 20th National Science Olympiad by finishing first in Georgia’s state competition last month. The team consisted of 15 students led by Booth science teacher Mary Wilde. This year’s team began preparations last September under the guidance of teachers and volunteer coaches for each event. This is the eighth championship for Booth over the past nine years.

Gold medal winners in the national competition included: Kevin Dietze and Craig Western (Dynamic Planet), Brian Forsyth and Jessica Everage (Forestry), Kevin Dietze and Landon Tufte (Robo-Billiards), and Robin Prebor and Olivia Tucker (Science Crime Busters).

Silver medal winners were: Lauren Hedge, Lyndsi Tufte and Jessica Everage (Picture This), Brian Huefner and Brian Forsyth (Bottle Rockets), Joseph Morris and Hannah Wilder (Fossils), and Danny Christ and Shelby Bachman (Wright Stuff).

Other medal winners included: Robin Prebor and Duggan Everage (4th, Road Scholar), Lauren Hedge, Brian Huefner and Lyndsi Tufte (4th, Mission Possible), and Shelby Bachman and Brian Huefner (5 th, Write It-Do It).

Booth also finished third in a trial event, Compute This, with B-team members Lauren Cash and Melanie Fratto.

“This team had to overcome rain, mud and broken equipment and remain focused throughout the day,” Wilde said. “They are an outstanding group of science students who deserve to be champions this year. They represented Booth, Fayette County and the State of Georgia very well.”
