Courthouse celebration nears

Workers are busy preparing Coweta’s landmark for its birthday celebration next weekend.

Hundreds are expected to gather at the Courthouse Square in Newnan June 5 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Coweta County’s most famous landmark.

The festivities begin at 11 a.m. with speeches and patriotic music. Coweta County public information officer Tom Corker said the courthouse has been festooned with patritic colors to add even more color to the event.

One of the interesting parts of the ceremony will be the delivery of a “companion stone by the Grand Lodge of Georgia F&AM.

“In 1904 the original cornerstone of the courthouse was laid with Masonic honors and the Masons have agreed to return to dedicate this new stone as well. The stone will find a final resting place on the North side of the courthouse near the

original cornerstone. Al Lewis has graciously agreed to provide the wagon

and horsepower,” Corker wrote in an email this week.

After the ceremony, residents can wander the historic courthouse for two hours and soak up some of the flavor that has led several television shows and movies to come to Coweta County and film.

Corker said there are two official commemorative items available for residents who want to preserve the moment. The two items are an engraved Alder Wood ornament and a hand-painted ceramic box. The ornament sells for $10 and the

ceramic box sells for $20. Corker said only 250 of the wooden ornaments have been

produced and only 100 of the ceramic boxes will be available for sale.

Anyone interested in purchasing either keepsake can contact the Coweta County Information Office or purchase the items following the June 5 ceremony while quantities last.
