Lower Fayetteville Rd. work could begin by year’s end

Commuters travelling the busy Lower Fayetteville Road in Newnan could see some construction by the end of the year to improve the road’s conditions.

That’s the word from Coweta County Administrator Theron Gay, who said this week preliminary engineering work is beginning on the project.

The plan is to add two feet to each side of the road, Gay said, to help make it safer. Workers will also softening out some curves and rework some of the bridges.

“We think it’s going to take about three months for the engineering work,” Gay said.

The road is often used by commuters as an alternative route to Peachtree City, instead of traffic-snarled Ga. Highway 34.

The $6 million project is being funded through the county’s agreement with the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority. In return, Coweta County agreed to let the transportation super-agency run express buses from Newnan to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. The buses should start running later this year and will provide commuters with a MARTA connection at the airport.

County Commission Chairman Vernon “Mutt” Hunter was a big proponent of the GRTA agreement, because it will ultimately provide more than $10 million in funding to fix some of the county’s most dangerous intersections and roads.
