Girl still hospitalized after Sunday crash in south Fayetteville

A 17-year-old Fayetteville girl was seriously injured when she was involved in a two-car collision in south Fayetteville Sunday afternoon.

According to a police report, Janelle C. Rivard of 275 Millhaven Landing was turning left onto Jimmie Mayfield Boulevard when the crash occurred. Rivard’s 1992 Ford Tempo was struck in the driver’s side by a 1992 Honda Accord driven by Rebecca C. Iler, 49, of 591 Forrest Ave., Fayetteville.

Iler was heading south on Jimmie Mayfield at the time and told police she thought she had the green light to proceed through the intersection.

Rivard was flown by medical helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital where she remained Tuesday afternoon. Her condition was unavailable, according to a spokesperson for the hospital.

Two witnesses said Iler’s vehicle failed to stop for a red light at the intersection just before the collision occurred, police said.

Iler was charged with failure to obey a traffic signal, the police report indicated.

Traffic at the scene had to be re-routed for one hour unti the vehicles were removed from the roadway, police said.
