ARC plan looks good for Fayette

If the voters approve a special sales tax (known as SPLOST) for county road-building projects this fall, Fayette County stands to do very well under the new Atlanta Regional Commission transportation plan.

That’s the word from county Public Works Director Lee Hearn who looked over ARC’s Mobility 2030 plan this week.

“We really did well in getting our projects included, but the key is in having the matching local funds to build the projects,” he said.

The county has more than 30 projects listed, including such big-ticket items as the East Fayetteville Bypass, with a $69 million price tag.

Other projects on the list include:

• The $16 million West Fayetteville bypass.

• A $23 million widening of Ga. Highway 85 from old Ga. Highway 92 to Ga. Highway 74.

• The $26 million widening of Ga. Highway 74 from Ga. Highway 54 to Ga. Highway 85.

One of the projects on the list also provides $10 million for bus service, which the Fayette County Commission has already rejected.

“There just saying that eventually the county will need some transit, but I really don’t expect that to occur anytime soon,” Hearn said.

The bus service is listed in the long-range plan for ARC.

The plan also allocates more than $900,000 for sidewalks in Fayetteville and Peachtree City.

Residents who want to view and comment on the plan should head to the Fayette County Administrative Complex May 25 from 6-8 p.m. ARC officials will be on hand to explain the plan.
