For the first time in recent memory, a Ruth Hill Elementary teacher was honored with Coweta County’s highest honor.

Janice Smith, who teaches second grade at the school, was named the 2004 Coweta County Teacher of the Year Monday.

“It was an interesting year. We had two men as finalists and a teacher from an elementary, middle and a high school,” said Public Information Officer Dean Jackson.

Smith was among the three finalists for the honor, along with Chuck Grovenstein, a health teacher at Evans Middle School, and Peter Skrmetti, a social studies teacher at East Coweta High School. Smith succeeds Nancy Williams, a Willis Road Elementary School special education teacher, who served as Coweta’s 2003 Teacher of the Year.

“It’s overwhelming to be honored for doing something you enjoy every day,” said Smith, who was introduced by Ruth Hill principal Betty Smith.
