Tyrone announces summer programs

Registration for summer programs offered by the Tyrone Recreation Center is now occurring Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at 881 Senoia Road. Registration is taken on a first-come basis and all participants must complete the necessary paperwork and pay the fees that apply prior to the start of each class or activity.

• Tyrone Dance Sampler. Join us as we demonstrate and experience the joy of different types of dance. Line dancing, salsa, Latin, and ballroom dancing are just of few of the dances that will be offered. Get ready for Founders Day and learn some new and some old dances. This sampler will offer participants the chance to try the dances out before they actually sign-up. Registration for upcoming classes will be taken the night of the dance. Monday, May 10, 7-9 p.m., $5 per person, ages 18 and up, Roger Spencer Community Center.

• Boots-N-Boogie. Cynthia currently teaches the most current line dances in the area, as well as reviews the old favorites. The lessons are fun and are made easy for everyone to learn. These lessons are taught to the level of the dancers. It’s a great way for beginners to start and the more advanced dancer’s) to pick up new moves! Mondays, three sessions (May 31-June 21, June 28-July 19, July 26-Aug. 16), 6:30-7:30 p.m. for beginners, 7:30-8:30 p.m. for intermediate, $20 cash, ages 18 and up, Roger Spencer Community Center.

• Havana Explosion. Come join us in the best taught, most sociable, and most entertaining classes in Fayette County — of any kind! Swing dancing is booming, Latin and Salsa are zooming, and the gentle elegance of Ballroom Dance is always a pleasure! No dance experience needed. Sundays, May 16-June 20 or June 27-Aug. 15, 7-8 p.m. for beginners, 8-9 p.m. for intermediate, $20 cash, ages 18 and up, Roger Spencer Community Center.

• Puppy Kindergarten. This kindergarten class is for puppies under 4 1/2 months. This class is designed to help you understand your pup and build a lasting, loving relationship. Topics covered are chewing, do’s and don’ts of puppy play, housebreaking, confidence-building exercises, basic commands (come, sit, down, stay), and puppy relaxation techniques. Saturdays, June 19-Aug. 14, 10-11 a.m., $95 per person, adult, Roger Spencer Community Center. No classes July 3. Please do not bring pups to first class.

• Wag-N-Train. Basic dog obedience. Let our instructor teach you how to train your dog to be a better companion for you and your family. She uses positive, motivational training techniques that are effective and easy to learn. Classes are for puppies and adult dogs 51/2 months or older. Commands will be taught along with drop, settle and handling, (massage and grooming). Our instructor makes dog training fun. Proof of current vaccinations (kennel cough, rabies and distemper) are required upon registration. Saturdays, June 19-Aug. 14, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., $95 per person, adult, Roger Spencer Community Center. No classes July 3. Please do not bring pups to first class.

• Ready-Aim-Shoot. Digital Photography 101. The course examines various techniques and applications of photography and covers both the darkroom along with basic photography. Areas of study include camera operation, exposure modes, resolution; file formats, memory storage, & printing options will be discussed. A special field trip is included. Fridays, June 25-Aug. 13 (no classes July 2), 7-8 p.m., $95 per person, ages 12 and up (parental involvement and supervision), Roger Spencer Community Center.

• Basic scrapbooking with Creative Memories. Your priceless photographs preserve the special people, events and stories of your life. Learn to preserve your cherished memories in safe, meaningful scrapbook photo albums. Students will need to bring 6-10 photos. Wednesdays, June 9-23 or Aug. 4-18, 7-9 p.m., $18 per person includes supplies, ages and up, Roger Spencer Community Center.

• Young Memory Keepers. Learn the benefits of creating keepsake albums (telling the story behind the picture) and ideas for different occasions. (Great ideas for Mom, Grandma, etc.) Deadline for each session is one week prior to the start of each class. Saturdays, June 5-19 or Aug. 14-28, $36 includes supplies, 1-2 p.m. for ages 8-11, 2:30-3:30 p.m. for ages 12-15, Roger Spencer Community Center.

• AARP Driver Safety Program. This is the nation’s first and largest classroom driver refresher course specially designed for motorists age 50 and older. It is intended to help older drivers improve their skills while teaching them to avoid accidents and traffic violations. The eight-hour course is taught in two, four-hour sessions spanning two days. The course helps drivers refine existing skills and develop safe, defensive driving techniques. AARP members and non-members alike may take the course. There are no tests. Monday and Tuesday, June 14-15, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., $10 per person, ages 55 and up, Roger Spencer Community Center (checks made payable to AARP).

• Senior Awareness Academy. Regardless of the circumstances, most older people say they worry about crime. Many fear becoming victims of crime. As a group, older people can be a powerful and an active force. A This crime prevention and personal safety program is designed to make Seniors aware of their personal safety, home security, neighborhood safety, frauds, scams, using 911, elder abuse, smoke detectors, severe weather awareness, first aid and fire extinguishers. Thursday, May 13, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., $5 per person, ages 55 and up, Kiwanis Center.

• Packing Your Genealogy Suitcase. When you’re getting ready for a trip, it pays to know what to put in your suitcase. This program will tell you where to go to find information about your ancestors and give you a flavor of the kinds of experiences family historians can look forward to. Saturdays, July 17-Aug. 21, 9 a.m.-noon, $20 per person, ages 12 and up, Roger Spencer Community Center.

• World’s Longest Yard Sale. Back by popular demand, we are off once again for this popular trip. We set out for a leisurely drive via a luxury motor coach along the 127 corridor sale route in Alabama while we shop for wonderful adventures and treasures along the way. The motor coach bay can hold anything smaller than a king size bed. Lunch will be on your own or you may bring your lunch & snacks on the bus. To register call 770-461-9714. • Mystery Trip. Join us as we travel to places unknown in this overnight trip. Upon arrival of our hotel we stop for a short rest & dinner and load up to travel for a big surprise. The next day we continue with an exciting tour before returning home. One breakfast & lunch included. A trip you cannot miss! Saturday and Sunday, July 3-4, depart 7 a.m., $176 per person (DBL) or $215 per person (SGL), adults.

• Crime In Your Community. We hear about carjacking, burglaries, and kidnappings all too often. Reduce your chances of becoming a victim through this informative and educational safety seminar. The main goal of this course is to help educate and inform the public on the latest trends in criminal activity. This 45-minute seminar will undoubtedly benefit you or your family. • Adventures in Babysitting. “What you NEED to know and what every parent WANTS in a responsible babysitter.” Prepares youth with the training every parent wants in a babysitter, including safety, basic child care, safe play, first aid and critical emergency action skills. Taught by a certified American Red Cross Instructor. Saturday, July 31, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., $30 per person, ages 11 and up, Roger Spencer Community Center.
