Local boys tennis teams advance to second round

The Starr’s Mill varsity boys tennis team opened the AAAAA state playoffs with a 4-1 win last Thursday over the Wayne County Yellow Jackets playing at Whitewater tennis courts.

Derrick Davison, the number-one singles player for Starr’s Mill, defeated Garrett Lewis 6-4, 6-1. Adam Esterline, the number-two, lost to the Yellow Jackets’ Ethan Atkinson 4-6, 2-6, while Eric Jackson, Starr’s Mill’s number-three, was victorious over Adam Freeze, 6-1, 6-1. In doubles, Starr’s Mill’s Evan Foster and Keith Kowal beat Lawrence Missel and Phillip Lewis 6-3, 6-4, while the Panthers’ number-two doubles team of Ben Matlaga and Thomas Davisson dominated James Klinger and Hoke Ogden, 6-1, 6-3. Starr’s Mill’s boys will now face Eagle’s Landing.

All of McIntosh’s boys won their matches against Camden County last Friday, winning the first round 5-0. The boys will now host Colquitt County. Fayette County’s boys defeated Benedictine in the first round of the playoffs and will now take on the winner of the Lowndes/Jonesboro match. The day and times of the second round matches have yet to be determined.
