Soccer postseason beginsBy MICHAEL BOYLAN The local soccer teams finished up their regular season over the weekend. For most of the teams the final games served as a tuneup for the playoffs, but for Sandy Creeks boys and girls it was a chance to end the season on a high note during their senior night games. Unfortunately, Northgate spoiled it for both the boys and girls. The Sandy Creek boys lost to Northgate 3-2. It was their fourth loss in a row. The Patriots finished the season with an overall record of 4-10. The Lady Patriots lost to Northgate 1-0. A win over the Lady Vikings may have been enough to vault Sandy Creek to the fourth seed in the AAAA state playoffs. Sandy Creeks girls finished the season with an overall record of 8-6-1. Fayette Countys girls wrapped up their season last Thursday with a 2-1 win over Jonesboro. The Lady Tigers finished the season with an overall record of 8-9-1. The Fayette County boys won 6-1 over Jonesboro and finished the season 14-3-1. They started the AAAAA state playoffs with a game against Valdosta at 5:30 p.m. If they win, they will take on the winner of Warner Robins-Camden County Saturday. Starrs Mills girls and boys both got wins last Thursday. The boys won 1-0 over Salem and the girls defeated Marist, 2-1, on goals from Tannah Castro and Emily Stevens. The boys opened the AAAAA state playoffs yesterday with a home game against Coffee at 7 p.m., while the girls host Colquitt County tonight at 6 p.m. A win by the boys will have them face the winner of Houston County/Benedictine Saturday, while a win from the girls will put them in match with the winner of Eagles Landing/Windsor Forest Sunday. McIntoshs Lady Chiefs hosted Bishop England, S.C. Saturday and played to a 0-0 tie. The boys had wrapped up their season April 16 with a 4-1 win over McEachern. The boys, the third seed from Region 4-AAAAA, traveled to Colquitt County last night and with a win would face the winner of Glynn Academy and Eagles Landing Saturday. The Lady Chiefs will host Lee County at 5 p.m. tonight with the winner taking on the winner of Jonesboro and Jenkins Sunday. For last nights scores, visit www.thecitizennews.com today. |
