Local soccer teams wrap up regular season this week

As you read this, the 4-AAAAA boys region soccer champion has been crowned. Fayette County squared off against Starr’s Mill for the region title and a number one seeding in the upcoming state tournament last night. Visit www.thecitizennews.com to see the results.

There are only a handful of regular season games left for our local soccer teams. Starting next week, the real season begins. The one where many of the teams entering the state playoffs have a chance of bringing home the state title.

The McIntosh boys wrapped up ther regular season with a 4-1 win over McEachern last Friday night. Though ranked second in the state, their loss to Fayette County and their tie with Starr’s Mill knocked them out of contention for a region title. If Fayette County wins the region, McIntosh will be the second seed in the state playoffs, but if the Panthers win they will fall to the third seed.

The McIntosh Lady Chiefs defeated Lassiter 8-0 Monday night and will wrap up their regular season with games against Westminster at home today at 5 p.m., Bishop England, S.C. at 7 p.m. Friday and at Pace Monday at 5:30 p.m. Scorers in the win against Lassiter were Jessi Lenze, who had a hat trick, Brittany Schneider, who added two goals, and Kellie Myles, Monica Hogan and Kristen McKillop, who each had a goal. Coach Marcia Clark also cited good play from defender Arlan Whittle, who also had an assist in the win.

After last night’s games at Starr’s Mill, Fayette County’s boys and girls finish with home games tomorrow against Jonesboro. The girls will will play at 5:30 and the boys will follow with a game at 7:30 p.m. Starr’s Mill’s boys host Salem tomorrow at 6 p.m., while the Lady Panthers will play at Marist tomorrow at 5:30 p.m.

Sandy Creek’s boys and girls will face Northgate tomorrow night for senior night. The boys are out of the playoff hunt, but the Sandy Creek girls are still battling for better seeding. A win against the Lady Vikings would help.

Playoffs for the boys are scheduled to start next Tuesday and playoffs for the girls are scheduled to start next Thursday for the girls. Be sure to visit www.thecitizennews.com for updates on the state soccer tournament.
