Parents can learn about their children’s education at Parent University

Fulton County parents can learn about new education laws, standardized tests and other aspects of their children’s schools at “Parent University,” on April 24, 2004.

District 7 Commissioner William “Bill” Edwards will bring words of encouragement during the session, which will be held 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., at Tri-Cities High School, 2575 Harris Street, East Point.

Commissioner Edwards, who created Parent University in 1995 and operated it until 2000, will speak at 9 a.m.

Parent University topics include:

• The impact of No Child Left Behind Act.

• What parents need to know about gangs

• Technology: computer literacy

• Parent Resource Panel: navigating the school system

• Understanding standardized testing

• Summer learning for the elementary school child

• Choosing the best: an abstinence sexual education program

• Understanding the early intervention program

• Implications of the Georgia Performance Standards on Fulton County curriculum

• Understanding special programs: English language learners, talented and gifted , and exceptional education

Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Fulton County Department of Parks & Recreation will provide childcare for pre-school and school-aged children.
