Breaking new ground

Members of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Parish recently launched a capital campaign entitled “Our Faith, Our Future,” with an initial pledge drive of $1.2 million, to break ground on a new church building on Lower Fayetteville Road. The total project cost for the completed church is $3.2 million.

Bill Craig heads up the campaign drive, with Susan Botticelli named assistant chairperson. When completed, the church will occupy part of a 40-acre site on Lower Fayetteville, just east of its intersection with McCollum-Sharpsburg Road (Ga. Hwy. 154). The property adjoins that of Cokes Chapel United Methodist Church.

Members of the campaign committee currently are hosting home receptions throughout the parish to show parishioners the first “bubble” sketches and preliminary elevations of the church complex, and to allow an opportunity for questions and comments.

“We want this to be a church that meets the needs and wishes of the entire parish,” stated Fr. Dan Fleming, pastor of St. Mary Magdalene, “so that when it is completed, we will all share the feeling that it is, in reality, our very own church.”

The church began as a mission of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Peachtree City and, last fall, was designated as an official parish of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. More than 450 families currently are registered.

Masses are celebrated on Saturdays at 5 p.m. and on Sundays at 10 a.m. at East Coweta High School’s cafeteria.
