Coweta’s population cracks the 100,000 barrier

If you think the roads and schools are more crowded than last year, you’re exactly right.

In figures released late last week, the U. S. Census Bureau estimated the county’s population as of July 1, 2003, at 101,395. That’s up nearly 3,700 residents from a year ago.

But even more staggering is the amount of growth in the last three years. In 2000, the Census estimated the county had 89,215 residents. That’s more than 12,000 residents added who are now travelling down Bullsboro Drive and Ga. Highway 34. The county’s growth rate in the last three years has been 13.7 percent.

Coweta now ranks as the 17th most populous county in the state, and is one of the 100 fastest growing counties in the country. While the county’s growth may seem amazing, it’s relatively small compared to some of the state’s other counties.

In the same three-year period, Forsyth County has added nearly 25,404 residents for a 25.8 percentage increase. Henry County has added 30,662 residents in three years for a 25.7 percent increase.
