Southland crowns new queen

By JANET McGREGOR

The field of contestants in the annual Southland Nursing Home Beauty Pageant was somewhat slimmer than usual. However, the quality of the candidates more than made up for the smaller numbers. Six beautiful spirits vied for the coveted crown. All received high marks from the seven judges. Each year the judges rate each candidate on their personality and physical appearance in relation to age, ability to communicate and alertness, participation in nursing home activities, attitude toward life and their excitement about being in the pageant.

The judges are provided with a one to two page bio on each candidate. In addition, the emcee talks to the entries, asking them various questions and engaging them in conversation. Judge Chris Edwards once again volunteered to emcee the event. Resplendent in his tuxedo, he wows the ladies, and their guests, each year. All agree he does an outstanding job in helping overcome any stage fright the contestants may have.

Once again a complement of Marines from the Aviation Logistic Squadron 42 dressed out for the event. Master Gunnery Sergeant Frank Goalen, Master Gunner Sergeant Ron Conure, Gunnery Sergeant Mike Munoz, Gunner Sergeant John Caldwell, Sergeant Nick Goffer and Sergeant Kane Overton and Lance Corporal Phong Nguyen escorted the contestants onto the “stage.” Three had the pleasure of participating in a touching surprise dance dedication planned by three of the contestants. The three, Louise Wilhite, Rose Field and Margaret Pate, slow danced with the Marine of their choice to a popular country tune as a tribute to their families.

Louise Wilhite took home the crown this year. Wilhite was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. She has two sons, three granddaughters and one grandson. She has many hobbies including painting, creating porcelain dolls and miniature doll houses, many of which are displayed in her room at Southland. She is very involved in Southland activities including Bible Study, music, Pokeno, Bingo, Arts & Crafts, and special events. She has made many friends and is always willing to help others. The staff noted that Ms. Louis “has a great personality and always has something nice to say about everyone.” Her personality definitely shone though for the judges!

This year’s judges wee County Commission Chairman Greg Dunn, Commissioner Peter Pfeifer, Dr. Tom Williams, Janet Dunn, Cappie Glanton, Debra Fowler and Janet Duckett. This was Duckett’s first year serving as judge. As always, numerous community groups and businesses donated their products and time to make the event a success. The Peachtree City Kiwanis, Stallings Frame and Trophy, and the families of contestants and residents.
