City’s sewer system getting closer to completion

Senoia residents should have a better idea next week of when the city’s sewerage system will be up and running.

City administrator Murray McAfee told the City Council Monday night that work on the spray field for the system is nearly 92 percent complete, while nearly 50 percent of the sewer lines have been laid.

McAfee and Mayor Robert Hannah were meeting with the contractors yesterday to get a better idea of when the project will be finished and when residents can expect to start seeing sewer bills.

After the city completes its portion of the project, residents will have 90 days to tap into the system without having to pay a tap fee. Residents will be responsible for the cost of running pipes from the city’s connection to their homes, and the city has pledged to offer residents a list of contractors that will do the work.

In other news from Monday’s meeting, the City Council:

• Learned the city’s new public works building should be finished within six months. McAfee said grading work has began on the site, which is located off Howard Road.

• Heard a request from Councilman Robert Belisle about the city’s baseball fields. Belisle said leaders of the baseball association approached him this week about the city helping to upgrade the fields. The councilman said the association is looking for batting cages, and he believes the city could pay for the cages with SPLOST funds. Mayor Robert Hannah said he was meeting with Coweta County Recreation Director Carl McKnight this week, and would see what support the county will offer the baseball association.
