McIntosh finishes third

The McIntosh High School Science Olympiad team finished a close third among 28 high schools participating in State Science Olympiad competition March 27th at Emory University.

Program Director Michael McCormick of Emory University said this year’s event was the closest in Georgia’s Science Olympiad history. McIntosh finished only six points behind the Parkview and Westminster teams, which tied for first. Only the top two schools in state competition advance to the national event in May.

Team members winning first-place awards were Michael Forsyth and Thomas Lucak for Forestry, and Whitney Baker, Christine Hedge and Steve Piasta for Experimental Design. Second-place medals went to Karen Christ, Patrick McAllister, Baker and Piasta. McAllister and Jonathan Hung also won third-place medals. Other team members were Kevin Christ, Derrick Faunce, Lydia Kalinke, Daniel Lin, Michael Massengale, Ashleigh Murphy, Patrick Thomas, Sarah Wilder and Michael Zhao.

“Our goal was to get McIntosh back into national Science Olympiad competition, and the students did a terrific job of preparing for their events and overcoming obstacles,” said team co-coach Mike De Lisle, McIntosh science teacher. “We fell just a bit short, but co-coach Stephanie Sisk and I are even more encouraged about our chances next year. We appreciate the support we received from sponsors, parents and other teachers.”
