Panthers pound Mundy’s Mill

The Starr’s Mill Panthers baseball team had the luxury of a day game when they traveled to take on Mundy’s Mill Monday afternoon, and they made the most of it, winning 18-2.

Yasushi Matsuyoshi took the mound for Starr’s Mill and pitched a solid three innings, giving up two hits, no runs and striking out five batters. He also went two for two at the plate and drove in a run. Twelve other members of the team also drove in runs in the win.

Carter Scurry went 2-for-3 at the plate and one of his hits was an inside-the-park home run to lead off the third inning. Danny Hartpence went 3-for-3 with an RBI.

The Panthers are 12-4 overall and 4-2 in the region. They will host East Coweta, the region leaders, at 5:30 p.m. this afternoon.

• Fayette County hosted Newnan Monday evening and lost 8-2. David Owens had an RBI double and a run scored and Phillip Robinson took the loss for the Tigers, pitching five innings.

Fayette County is off until next Monday when they host Riverdale at 6 p.m.

• Our Lady of Mercy dropped a pair of games, 13-6 to Bowdon and 4-3 to Mt. Zion of Carrollton. Todd Benson homered twice during the week for the Bobcats, raising his batting average to .440. Ralph Woolfolk homered once and is also hitting .440.

• Landmark committed 6 errors and walked 7 batters in a losing decision to region foe Heard County. Down 9-3 in the sixth inning, Landmark mounted a comeback, bringing the the margin to within 3. The War Eagles were ready to complete the comeback bid when the game was halted in the middle of the seventh inning due to darkness.

Landmark spotted rival Bowdon to a 5-0 first-inning lead Friday, but then rallied to score 14 runs on 18 hits to defeat the Red Devils by a final score of 14-7. Kyle Gray (4-1) got the win, settling down after the rocky first inning to pitch nearly perfect the rest of the way. Tyler Chapman led the Eagles with a 4-for-5 performance including a home run and a double. Miles King was 3-for-4 with two doubles.

The War Eagles are 6-6 overall and 2-1 in Region 5-A.
