CCSU sending 5 professors to Europe with Study Abroad

Clayton State assistant professor Dr. Steve Spence is teaching "Italy in American Literature" this semester at the Morrow-based University. But this summer, Spence will teach the class on Italy in Italy, as part of the Study Abroad program.

He is one of five Clayton State faculty members that will teach abroad this summer.

Spence, program coordinator of Clayton State’s Communication & Media Studies program, will teach for five weeks in the European Council program in Montepulciano, Italy. Following Spence’s five weeks, Professor of History Dr. Robert Welborn will teach a second five-week course in Montepulciano. Welborn is treasurer for the Georgia Consortium of International Studies and the director of International Studies at the University.

Dr. Ron Jackson, an assistant professor of philosophy in the Department of Humanities, will spend three weeks teaching in Hungary. Jackson will make contacts with various Hungarian universities and tour some of the most historic areas of the country. He has received the coveted Chancellor’s Award of $1,000 to help defray the cost of the program.

Dr. Juliet D’Souza, an assistant professor of finance in Clayton State’s School of Business, will spend four weeks in the Baltic Republics and Russia. D’Souza has been selected as a participant in the Fulbright-Hayes program sponsored by Andrews College, a Methodist college in Cuthbert, Ga. Like the Chancellor’s Award, the Fulbright-Hayes program is quite competitive. Only 15 faculty and administrators were selected for this program.

Dr. Gary May, assistant professor of management in Clayton State’s School of Business, will teach five weeks in London. Like Spence and Welborn, May teaches as part if the European Council program.

Not only are professors allowed to teach abroad for the summer, Clayton State students are welcome to earn course credit in the programs sponsored by the European Council.

“We have 14 Clayton State students signed up to spend the summer in Europe, nine in Italy and five in England” said Welborn. “This is a new record for Clayton State.”

Clayton State is currently hosting a foreign exchange student as well. Jonathon Coulson, from the University of Northumbria in England, began classes at Clayton State this semester. He will return to his home university this summer.
