Dry, windy weather leads to temporary burn ban

Officials have halted the issuance of outdoor burning permits for unincorporated Fayette County, Tyrone, Brooks and Woolsey due to the dry conditions and windy weather the area has experienced recently.

The dry spell has made conditions more favorable for controlled burns to get out of control, and recent windy weather has only fueled the danger, officials said.

As soon as the temporary burn ban is lifted, the county will update its audio message on the phone line that residents must call to get permits: 770-461-1321, ext. 5468.

The county is in a rainfall deficit, said Capt. Pete Nelms of the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

“We have had a high number of brush fires,” Nelms said.

That includes both controlled burns which get out of control and other fires that are likely started by motorists throwing cigarette butts out the window of their vehicles, Nelms said.
