Wildflower Festival announces winners

The 18th Annual Wildflower Festival of the Arts is set for May 15-16. This unique juried show features artists from around the country with emphasis on variety and quality. The show is held yearly on the historic square in downtown Dahlonega, during the third weekend in May. This festival has drawn thousands of people from around the country to the picturesque mountain village for almost two decades.

This year’s show will offer 81 artists the opportunity to exhibit and sell visual arts and fine crafts in all mediums including painting, drawing, weaving, photography, jewelry and others. Additionally, commemorative posters and T-shirts celebrating the festival are selected from artists entries and made available each year. Winners for this year’s competition have just been announced.

The official 18th Annual Wildflower Festival of the Arts poster is a photograph by Dahlonega artist Linda Deaton. The untitled photograph features the groundsel, a native wildflower. The prize for the T-shirt design has been awarded to Dawsonville artist Carol Cutts. Official Wildflower T-shirts will reproduce her watercolor “Iris.”

Other activities include a wildflower awareness area, featuring specimens of native flora and fauna, with local experts to explain the growing conditions, tips for identification and precautions.

The Georgia Mountains Master Gardeners will host a Garden Expo in association with the festival. Events such as plant sales, garden related displays with information and many garden seminars by local experts and Master Gardeners are scheduled in the

Community House throughout the two-day festival. Additionally, Georgia Mountains Master Gardeners will present a sales area featuring local wildflowers as well as beautiful garden flowers and plants.

Wildflower walks and wildflower tours are scheduled throughout the event and are guided by experts from North Georgia College and State University and members of Beta Phi. A hands-on children’s art area and local performing arts will also be featured.

The Wildflower Festival of the Arts is sponsored each year by the Beta Phi

Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, a woman’s social sorority which emphasizes fine arts and culture in our communities and by Lumpkin County Bank. Proceeds from this festival promote arts in the community.
