Tigers cool Chiefs on diamond

On a night better suited for football or ice fishing, the Fayette County Tigers traveled down the road Wednesday to take on their rivals, the McIntosh Chiefs.

The rain from earlier in the day did not delay the start of the game, but a shower before the third inning did slow things down and put a chill into the gathering of fans who braved the cool weather to watch the two rivals go head to head in the nearly three hour battle. The Tigers emerged victorious, 6-3.

Phillip Robinson took the mound for the Tigers and was dominant, striking out 10 batters and giving up one run before the Chiefs drove in two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Taylor Lee’s single in the bottom of the second gave McIntosh a one-run lead going into the third inning, but the Tigers tied it at the top of the third with a single, good baserunning and capitalizing on a McIntosh error. McIntosh pitcher Ryan Schwartz got roughed up a bit in the fourth inning, giving up three runs on three hits. Ri’Chard Davis drove in two of the runs in the fourth, while Hunter Rozakos drove in one.

Where it seemed that the Tigers’ bats heated up after the brief but chilling downpour, the Chiefs’ bats were cooled down, carving out only one hit in the third through fifth innings. The Tigers added two more runs in the fifth with a two-run home run from Ricky Williams.

The Tigers will host Newnan Monday at 6 p.m. and then will be able to enjoy spring break before hosting Riverdale Apr. 12 at 6 p.m.

Fans looking to see the next match between the Chiefs and Tigers can circle Friday, April 23, on their calendars. The Tigers will host the Chiefs at 7 p.m. and fans can be almost certain that the game will not be interrupted by freezing rain.
