Fayetteville’s massage therapy law change put on hold

Changes to a Fayetteville ordinance that would allow licensed massage therapists to practice on their own were tabled Thursday night by the City Council.

The president of a statewide massage therapists organization has proposed some additional changes, said Director of Planning and Zoning Jahnee Prince. The new language will improve the ordinance and make it easier for the city to determine whether a businessperson meets the guidelines of the ordinance.

“It will more clearly define the qualifications ... and make it easier to check their credentials,” Prince said.

Currently, massage therapists in Fayetteville must work with a physician or as part of a sports medicine clinic. Changes to the ordinance would allow them to have their own free-standing business.

The changes would also clarify that professional massage therapists are different than the seedy “massage parlors” that city ordinance limits to certain zoning districts as it does all sexually-oriented businesses.

The new changes are being made by the city attorney in hopes of having the new ordinance ready to vote on at the next city council meeting, Prince said.
