Moose still needs approval from committee to be in the clear

The moose sculpture at Bugaboo Creek Steak House may get its reprieve after all.

Although the Fayetteville City Council approved changes to an ordinance that will allow public art at its Thursday meeting, the Moose isn’t totally out of the woods yet.

Under the new ordinance, the city’s art and architectural advisory committee must review the Moose to determine if it meets the ordinance’s definition of public art, said Director of Zoning Jahnee Prince.

In this case, because the moose will require a change to the restaurant’s site plan, the committee will forward its recommendation to the city’s planning and zoning commission, which will have the final say on the matter, Prince said.

The committee, which was originally formed to review architectural plans for developments in the Main Street district, will get two new members to help them hash through the public art ordinance requirements for each piece of public art up for consideration. The two new members will bring the committee’s total membership to nine.

Since the moose is a sculpture, and a sculpture is one of the accepted works of art listed under the ordinance, Prince said she thought it was likely the committee would approve the moose.

The moose was actually the impetus for city staff developing the public art ordinance. Previously, the moose would have been considered another sign for the business, giving it one more than allowed.

In other business, the council also approved housekeeping changes to the city’s sign ordinance. The changes add a definition to cover drive-through menu signs for restaurants and another section to deal with signs for office buildings, which had not been addressed in previous versions of the ordinance, Prince said.
