Tigers cool Chiefs on diamond

On a night better suited for football or ice fishing, the McIntosh Chiefs varsity baseball team hosted the Fayette County Tigers.

The rain from earlier in the day did not delay the start of the game, but a shower before the third inning did slow things down and put a chill into the gathering of fans who braved the cool weather to watch the two rivals go head to head in the nearly three hour battle. The Tigers emerged victorious, 6-3.

Ryan Schwartz took the mound for the Chiefs and was dominant in the first three innings, giving up one run on one hit and striking out six batters. Taylor Lee’s single in the bottom of the second gave McIntosh a one-run lead going into the third inning, but the Tigers tied it at the top of the third with a single, good baserunning and capitalizing on a McIntosh error. Schwartz got roughed up a bit in the fourth inning, giving up three runs on three hits. He was relieved by Brendan Hall, who closed out the inning.

Where it seemed that the Tigers’ bats heated up after the brief but chilling downpour, the Chiefs’ bats were cooled down, carving out only one hit in the third through fifth innings. The Tigers added two more runs in the fifth with a two run home run from Ricky Williams.

In the sixth, Hall got all three outs from strikeouts, which pumped the Chiefs’ spirits and bats back up. With two men on and two out, Alex Carey drove in two runs with a single. Hall finished with four strikeouts, three hits and two walks.

McIntosh will play at Newnan tonight at 7 p.m. follwed by a doubleheader in Colquitt Saturday. The Chiefs will take on Shiloh at 2 p.m. followed by a game against Colquitt at 5 p.m. They will travel to take on Riverdale next Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Fans looking to see the rubber match between the Chiefs and Tigers can circle Friday, April 23, on their calendars. The Tigers will host the Chiefs at 7 p.m. and fans can be almost certain that the game will not be interrupted by freezing rain.
