Searching for weekend yard sales as easy as ‘point and click’ in PTC

Spring in Peachtree City brings about an explosion of weekend yard sale signs. But starting this year, fans of yard sale shopping don’t have to drive around looking for the signs to point the way.

Instead, a guide to local sales scheduled each week is available online via the city’s Web site, www.peachtree-city.org.

“Anyone can now check our our Virtual Neighborhoods page and see a full listing of yard sales registered with the city,” explained Betsy Tyler, public information officer for the city.

The site provides the street address, subdivision, and dates of the sale. Additionally, users can click on the address and link to Mapquest for a map of the location.

Adding the list to the Virtual Neighborhoods feature was a logical step for the city, Tyler said.

Peachtree City residents holding yard sales are already required to register them with the city and obtain the authorized signs advertising the sale at City Hall.

“This feature just gives our residents a little extra promotion for their registration,” Tyler said.

Tyler said the service has already generated excitement.

“At a City Clerks training class in Athens last month, several clerks from neighboring towns were discussing their love of coming to Peachtree City yard sales. When I told them we now had the sales listed on our web site, they were ecstatic.”

According to the city registration log, March really kicks off the yard sale season in town. Over the past three weekends, yard sales jumped to numbers not seen since before the Thanksgiving Holiday, with an average of 28 sales each weekend, with 38 held on the weekend of March 26 alone.

From late November through February, there were an average of only four or five sales each weekend.

Tyler said, “Once there are 30 to 40 sales on a Saturday, it’s much more difficult to make sure you find them all just by looking at the signs. The listing on the web site will make sure you won’t miss any.”

The City’s Virtual Neighborhoods page also features copies of most neighborhood covenants, as well as neighborhood zoning, and the list of streets scheduled for paving this summer. Other pages on the site allow residents to research recent city council minutes, download many of the city’s forms, view current city job openings, register for Recreation classes, and pay court fines with a credit card.

Tyler said, “We will be updating the site over the coming months, but there are already a lot of features to make City Hall more convenient to our residents.”
