Fayette voters will decide liquor by the drink this summer

Fayette voters will decide July 20 whether mixed drinks will be sold in the unincorporated county.

County commission executive assistant Carol Chandler confirmed the vote will occur this summer instead of appearing on the November general election ballot.

“I don’t think they ever mentioned a date in their motion to call for a referendum, but the vote will be in July,” she said.

In previous discussions about sending the matter to the voters, the commission had only said it couldn’t occur during last March’s election, because of the time frame involved in the process.

The referendum question must be legally written 60 days before the election for proper advertising. The issue of liquor by the drink was first brought before the board in January, so the board would not have had enough time to get it written before the March presidential preference vote.

Chandler said the staff should have the referendum drafted by mid-May to meet all the legal requirements.

Peachtree City, Fayetteville and Tyrone all have approved liquor by the drink sales. The areas outside the cities currently have beer and wine sales.
