Coweta top teachers named

Teachers of the Year for each of Coweta County’s 27 public schools have been elected by their fellow faculty members. They will participate in the May 10 Coweta County Teacher of the Year Program, which the Board of Education presents annually with the Newnan Pilot Club.

The 2004 Teachers of the Year TOTYs from each school are:

• Aaron Corley, fifth grade, Arbor Springs Elementary.

• Dana Miller, second grade, Arnco-Sargent Elementary.

• Ginny MacDonald, fourth grade, Atkinson Elementary.

• Amy Vickery, fourth grade, Canongate Elementary.

• Geanie Stroble, special education, Eastside Elementary.

• Katie Garrett, first grade, Elm Street Elementary.

• Denise Dix, third grade, Jefferson Parkway Elementary.

• Cindy Bowles, pre-K, Maggie Brown Elementary.

• Sondra Lee, second grade, Moreland Elementary.

• Sherry Lambert, kindergarten, Newnan Crossing Elementary.

• Katie Fleck, third grade, Northside Elementary.

• Yvonne Wright, fifth grade, Poplar Road Elementary.

• Janice Smith, second grade, Ruth Hill Elementary.

• Arleen Smith, special education, Thomas Crossroads Elementary.

• Kate Davis, physical education, Western Elementary.

• Debbie Jones, third grade, White Oak Elementary.

• Adrienne Maples, fourth grade, Willis Road Elementary.

• Naima Dodard, eighth grade, Arnall Middle.

• Christie Adams, seventh grade, East Coweta Middle.

• Jenny Gloer, seventh and eighth grade science REACH, Madras Middle.

• Chuck Grovenstein, health, Evans Middle.

• Cindy Valentine, language arts REACH, Smokey Road Middle.

• Peter Skrmetti, social studies, East Coweta High.

• Randy Moore, math, Central Education Center.

• Daphne Keene, English, Newnan High.

• Michael Berry, social studies, Northgate High.

• Dan Umbach, math, Winston Dowdell Academy.

The 2004 Coweta Teacher of the Year will be named at the May 10 event. The 2003 Coweta County Teacher of the Year is Nancy Williams of Willis Road Elementary.

Teachers of the Year are selected by their peers for the quality of their teaching, professional development, teaching philosophy and methods, community involvement, and contributions to education. From the local nominees will come three finalists, one of whom will be chosen Coweta Teacher of the Year and nominee for Georgia Teacher of the Year.

The Coweta County School System is the only school system in Georgia with three state teachers of the year, including Lorraine Johnson, Nancy Royal and Jamie Lipscomb. There have also been twelve Georgia TOTY semi-finalists from Coweta since 1986.
