No more leashes for cats

Cat owners will no longer be breaking the law if they allow their cats to roam freely.

During Tuesday’s meeting of the Coweta County Commission, the commission instructed county attorney Mitch Powell to look at “cleaning up” the county’s leash law.

Commissioner Leigh Schlumper said she had talked to a distraught pet owner, who recently had her cat killed by a neighbor.

“They told her they could charge the residents with cruelty, but the cat was supposed to be on a leash according to our ordinance,” she said.

“I’ve never seen a cat on a leash in my life,” said Commissioner Vernon “Mutt” Hunter.

Hunter immediately called for a vote that would take language out of the ordinance requiring cats to be tethered. The motion passed unanimously.

The commission also instructed Powell to look at provisions in the ordinance that governed electronic fences.

“Those things hardly ever work,” Schlumper said.

Powell pledged to look over the ordinance and bring a revised copy to the commission.
