Facility dedicated to Dohany

A local health agency has dedicated a new facility to the memory of someone who did a great deal of work in Fayette County over the years.

Al Dohany began his career in District Four Public Health as an environmental health specialist in Fayette County. He also served as an environmental health specialist in Butts County before taking the health planner position at District Four, where he also served as the district emergency coordinator. He held a Ph.D. in entomology.

He may have been best known for his magic shows, which he used to teach children about health and safety. This passion for education was the driving force behind much of his work. He was always looking for different ways to make learning fun, and his sense of humor and constant willingness to help made him a pleasure to work with, according to coworkers.

Dohany put District Four “ahead of the curve” in many areas, according to District Four MIS Manager Claude Johnson, especially customer service and information systems. His work in emergency planning focused on response to natural disasters, but is a large part of the district’s current work on bioterrorism response.

The Georgia Public Health Association created the Alexander Louis Dohany Award for Community Service. This annual award honors a health provider in the state who demonstrates extensive community involvement while working in public health.

The Bioterrorism Conference and Training Room, which also serves as the Emergency Operations Center, marries two of the things that Dohany was most dedicated to - planning and education.
