Rising Starr takes first at local Science Olympiad Rising Starr Middle School won top honors at the Science Olympiad Feb. 28 at Gordon College in Barnesville. They move on to the state competition at Georgia State University April 17. Students from 11 schools competed in 23 different events, like Storm the Castle. This was a fitting title for the event, since students used models of medieval era missile launchers to throw racquetballs. In another event, Picture This, students puzzled over how to draw science concepts like phylum, energy and mass. Modeled after the game Pictionary, students had to guess the concept their teammates drew. Gordon Prof. Theresa Stanley, the tournament director, said the Olympiad was created 20 years ago with the goals of improving the quality of science education, instilling passion for science, and providing recognition for science students. Finishing right behind Rising Starr in the competition were Booth Middle and Flat Rock Middle.
