Fulton students advance to state spelling bee

Words such as “detrimentally,” “seder,” and “yeti” weren’t a challenge for Fulton County students Biplab Panda and Christopher Thomas, who were the winner and first runner-up, respectively, of the District 4 spelling bee. Both students now advance to the state spelling bee, to be held March 19 at Georgia State University.

Biplab, a two-time winner of the Fulton spelling bee and the state runner-up last year, correctly spelled “hypothalamus” - the region of the brain that controls body temperature, thirst, and hunger - to take home the district title. He is an eighth grade student at the Fulton Science Academy.

Christopher, an eighth grader at Bear Creek Middle School, was first runner-up and also advances to the state competition. River Trail Middle School eighth grader Rochelle Zheng is the District 4 alternate and will advance to the state finals if either Biplab or Christopher cannot compete.

The three Fulton students competed against eight other elementary and middle school champions from the Atlanta City, Paulding, and Douglas school systems in the district competition. A total of 22 students will compete at the state spelling bee, and the overall champion will move on to the national bee in Washington D.C. held May 30 - June 4.
