County considers liquor vote for 2nd time this year

Will Fayette’s voters head to the polls this November and vote on liquor by the drink in the unincorporated county?

The issue could be decided tomorrow night when the Fayette County Commission discusses the liquor by the drink issue again.

In January, the County Commission took no action on the issue when it was first brought to them by John Boykin, who owns the Palmer Course at Starr’s Mill.

“There’s no way in good conscience that I could do this,” said Commissioner A.G. VanLandingham.

Commissioners Herb Frady and Peter Pfeifer agreed with VanLandingham. Frady added that he had pledged not to put this issue on the ballot during his years of public service and there was a process in place to get it to the voters.

Boykin, who owns the Palmer Course at Starr’s Mill, had asked the board to put it on the ballot to help him increase revenues at his course and also to increase charitable contributions. Boykin operates the course as a nonprofit entity and donates proceeds from his course to several county charities.

Commission Executive Assistant Carol Chandler said the reason it’s back on tomorrow’s agenda is the county received letters from Boykin, along with the Italian Oven and the Old Mill Steakhouse, who are also asking the county to put it on the ballot.

“Since the commission took no action on the item, there is not a waiting period,” she said.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the administrative complex on Stonewall Avenue.
