God and His sense of humor

By DR. KNOX HERNDON
Pastor

I can remember some of my early childhood memories of what a “spiritual man” looked like. At that age, it seemed to me that the more spiritual a man was supposed to be, he looked a certain way. These men whom I vividly remembered seemed to all grit their teeth when they talked and carried very heavy Bibles. Most of them seemed to be right at home at a funeral. In other words they could have been paid mourners or could just look sorrowful naturally. I never really knew which was true.

In Psalms 37:12-13 we read, “The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth.” Then in Verse 13 we read, “The Lord shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming.”

Could it possibly be true that the Lord has a sense of humor? Could it be that He ever laughs? Well, it says so.

Could it be that the people who are doing all the harm here in America and doing evil are being laughed at by the Lord? I believe precisely that they are.

In Psalms 2:2 we read that the “kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against his anointed saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.”

Wow, here are two places where the Lord shall laugh at them. Both places are referring to people who are against the Lord and his anointed.

It is interesting to me how much of the Hollywood crowd is making fun of Mel Gibson for his truly authentic portrayal of the crucifixion of Jesus. It was reported to me by a parishioner that during the Oscar awards Joan Rivers was attempting a laugh from the crowd when she attempted twice to make fun of Mel Gibson and the crucifixion. Personally, I have never thought she was funny and neither did the crowd that night. I wonder where the real laugh will one day come from?

One of my favorite TV announcers is Neal Cavuto on the Fox News Channel. He was rolling along, talking about the Mel Gibson movie and how the word was out that Hollywood would probably now be “marginalizing” Mel Gibson because of his movie. Neal fired back that it wasn’t about Mel Gibson but it was all about the subject: “Jesus of Nazareth.” He then went on to say, “Hollywood, and all those speaking against this subject better hope the "subject" doesn’t marginalize them.”

God bless you, Neal. Keep up the good work. Let the world laugh on and await the laugh from the heavens.
