Fairburn’s police department rocked by resignation

Fairburn officials are staying tight-lipped about a resignation this week from the police department.

City Administrator Jim Williams confirmed Wednesday that Major Danny Crawford resigned from the force, but that’s all he would say. Police Chief Frederick Brown would also not comment on the issue.

A source told the Citizen this week that Major Danny Crawford, who headed the Uniform Division, was asked to resign his post March 1. The source said the new position which Crawford held was eliminated in a restructuring of positions. The S.T.O.P. unit designed to enforce traffic violations may have been part of that issue.

The source also told The Citizen that many neighborhoods and citizens were upset with the new emphasis on traffic violations, because it took resources away from the patrol division.

Crawford, who had been with the Auburn, Ga., Police Department prior to working in Fairburn had been recommended for the Governor’s Award in his previous position.
