Local student wins speech contest

Chris Craig’s Fayette County High School English class participated recently in the national Voice of Democracy Speech Contest for high school students sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. According to this group, “Participants in this national contest build character and good citizenship while improving skills in communication, writing and public speaking.”

VFW Post 5257 of Stone Mountain awarded Kelly Meredith, a student in Mr. Craig’s class, first place in the 2003-2004 school year. Meredith’s five-minute speech presented her thoughts on “My Commitment to America’s Future.”

Her winning speech was forwarded to the 5th District competition, where it placed first. District First Place entries were judged at the statewide competition, where Meredith won third place.

She will be honored at the VFW annual awards dinner and ceremony in March where she will present her speech and receive her awards. The VFW also praised Craig for helping develop the communication skills of his student.
