Fayette teens complete Youth Challenge

Four Fayette County teens were among 140 recent graduates from the National Guard-sponsored Youth Challenge Academy at Fort Gordon near Augusta.

Durod D. Stowers of Peachtree City and Stephens K. Newton, Billy F. Miller, Jr., and Michael E. Jewsome of Fayetteville completed the 22-week, in-residence program and graduated at commencement ceremonies last weekend in Macon. The commencement speaker was Jennifer C. Buck, deputy assistant secretary of defense for reserve affairs (resources).

The 11-year old, all-voluntary National Guard-sponsored youth program focuses upon academic completion and the development of important life skills. It is designed to help high school dropouts complete their education and receive a GED. Georgia has two Youth Challenge Academy campuses; the original campus is located at Fort Stewart near Savannah, and the second campus at Fort Gordon.
