Fayetteville traffic project may be killed

The addition of another turn lane to north Jeff Davis to improve traffic flow onto Ga. Highway 85 north may not happen after all.

City Engineer Don Easterbrook is recommending the project be scrapped since Lee Najjar, owner of the Fayetteville Corners shopping center, said he would only agree to closing the curb cut if he is paid for it.

The matter will be discussed at Thursday’s City Council meeting at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall.

The project might also create a backup problem on Hwy. 85 at the next two traffic lights. Currently, traffic turning right off Jeff Davis onto Hwy. 85 has to wait in the same lane as traffic wanting to go straight onto Ga. Highway 314.

A long-term plan for the intersection is in Fayette County’s transportation plan and the extra lane could be reconsidered at that time, Easterbrook said.
