North Fayette to get a big park — a very big park

Imagine a park nearly as big as Atlanta’s Piedmont Park in Fayette County.

Well, you may not have to imagine much longer, as the Fayette County Commission signed off last week on the Kenwood Park master plan.

The 175-acre park is located off Kenwood Road and Ga. Highway 279, and would bring much-needed recreational opportunities to residents in the northern part of the county.

“This will be one of our crown jewels,” said Commission Chairman Greg Dunn.

The master plan was developed by consultant David West, who works with Atlanta-based Robert and Company.

During his presentation, West told the county how the site contained different types of topography, from rock areas to meadows and wetlands.

Included in the park would be:

• Four baseball fields.

• Four softball fields.

• Two soccer fields.

• One multipurpose field and a running track.

• Eight tennis courts and four basketball courts.

“This has been a long time coming, and we were able to purchase this land through the state’s greenspace program,” Dunn added.

County recreation director Anita Godbee said the county has $537,000 in this year’s budget to help clear the land, and said her department is busy crunching numbers to determine the final cost of the park.

“The park will be built in phases through money from the county’s capital improvement plan,” she said.

The County Commission thanked West for his work, and added that he was a county resident.

“I think you have a better idea of what we were looking for,” said Dunn.
