Fayette County’s leaders will gather this afternoon to discuss the county’s plans to call for a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax vote in November.

The tax, which is estimated to bring in more than $100 million over a five-year period, would help the county pay for its future transportation needs.

Late last year, the county unveiled a transportation plan enumerating nearly $400 million in projects to keep the traffic snarls at a minimum over the next 20 years.

Included in the plan are 20 intersection or traffic signal improvements, 28 road upgrades, 10 bridge projects and seven street beautification projects.

During a meeting in November, the county picked a “Top 10” list of transportation projects. The county’s leaders reached a consensus on the projects and picked the top three priorities as the East Fayetteville Bypass, the West Fayetteville Bypass and the widening of Ga. Highway 54 east of Fayetteville to the Clayton County border.

Leaders from the county and the municipalities are meeting at the county’s administrative complex at 3:30 p.m. today to get input from the municipal officials on the November vote.
