Power out in PTC after major line hit by tree

It wasn’t the sleet that caused problems when Wednesday night’s winter storm rolled through.

The wind was the big culprit, downing a number of trees in Peachtree City, including a large one that brought down a main power line on Robinson Road.

Fayette County public schools were closed in light of the wintry weather and with potential snow and ice in the forecast for Thursday.

When the power went out Wednesday night in Peachtree City, it affected traffic lights on Ga. Highway 54, said Fire Chief Stony Lohr.

The National Weather Service office in Peachtree City recorded winds up to 28 mph here overnight.

Between 10:30 p.m. and midnight, the fire department responded to nine calls, including a small electrical fire in the HVAC system at the Wyndham Peachtree Executive Conference Center. Hotel guests had to be evacuated briefly while the source of the smoke was located, Lohr said.

Lohr said the city was fortunate not to have any serious auto accidents after the power cut out the traffic lights on Hwy. 54.

City public works crews worked Thursday morning to clear trees that blocked roads.
